*The blog has changed quite a bit since writing this post

For finding out who I, Jihyun Julie Jeon, am, one has to look no further than my blog. Although there aren't any posts on it yet, everything, from the name to the background, represents a part of me.

The name of my blog, 0110110101101001011011100110010000100000011100000110000101101100011000010110001101100101, is actually binary code for "My Mind Palace" (I wanted to have a more personal name like "Jihyun's Mind Palace" but I couldn't get it to fit under 100 characters) The use of binary code represents my passion for computer programming and my dreams to become a computer programmer.

The name itself, "Mind Palace", is a reference to the BBC hit tv series, Sherlock. A keen Sherlockian would have noticed that the first sentence of this post is also a reference to part of a scene in "The Sign of Three". I am a huge fan of the series, having binge-watched it at least 4 times. Every time I watch the series, everything from the spectacular deductions to the unique characters never fails to surprise me.

The background photograph is supposed to represent my love for going to new places. I don't necessarily mean traveling, which I also enjoy. I enjoy living in other countries, whether for 2 weeks or for 5 years, and meeting new people and getting hands-on experience of the culture. One of my dreams is to live in at least 2 countries of all continents and I hope it comes true one day.

The photograph above is of the small portion of my cookbook collection that I have brought with me to school. I loved cooking for as long as I can remember, starting from my barbie cooking toys to actually dreaming of becoming a chef. I gave up that dream after realizing that I only enjoy cooking in small portions and that I am not really good at it, but my love for cooking still remains.
My laptop is able to cover parts about me that my blog couldn't. Everything that I love (and could find a pretty sticker of) is decorating my laptop. Sherlock, of course, is on it along with How I Met Your Mother and The Office. My favorite book series, Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, is up there along with various Disney stickers. Finally, dogs are decorating every empty spot. Some people say that my laptop looks unorganized but I love looking at it, thinking about all the things that make me happy.

  1. The Office - I love it. You will be happy to know it is coming back (without Michael Scott, unfortunately). I also like Sherlock, but find that the season 1 is the best. Aesthetically I really like your blog! Stylish and fresh, and I learn a lot about you in this post. I am always happy to meet students who want to get into CS, because it makes my job easier as a counselor (college choices more obvious, and career path more certain). When I visit KMLA alumni in the US it is shocking how many of them change from humanities and other fields to CS in the second year of college. Flora Park from 16th wave is a great mentor to follow (Columbia, just got a job even before graduating at Lyft as a programmer in San Francisco). Keep writing and have fun.

  2. The episode on the mind palace was certainly "a sparkling addition to the series"!

Frankenstein reimagined

*This was written as a creative writing assignment on June 18, 2018 for Ms. Seuk's British literature class. While attempting to imitate Mary Shelley's voice as closely as possible, I wrote what would have happened if Frankenstein actually created the mate for his monster instead of destroying it. I sat at my desk, blindly staring at the violent storm ripping at the windows. The thunder was roaring and the wind was howling as if to chastise me. Rain pelted the windows, ready to break in. A crack of lightening illuminated the room, only to be followed by impenetrable darkness seconds later. The lightening brought back memories I was trying to avoid. The lightening was not unlike the one that struck earlier in the night. With that crack of lightening, another filthy fiend opened its eyes. As promised, the monster took its female away out of my sight. It was now over. The monster and its partner were going to go far away, unable to harm anyone anymore. But disgust and agony s...

A Thorough Examination of Lady Macbeth

***This essay was written on April 2, 2018 for Ms. Seuk's British Literature class Lady Macbeth is the character who shows the most drastic change in the play  Macbeth .From a devious criminal mastermind to a sleepwalking suicide victim, she is the epitome of a guilt-ridden character. Although she is only the wife of the main character in his namesake play , Lady Macbeth and her evolution throughout the play plays a significant role in Macbeth . In the beginning of the play, she is full of greed and would do anything to satisfy her desires. Immediately after reading the letter that alerts her of the prophecy, she says  “Yet do I fear fthy nature, It is too full o’th’milk of human kindness To catch the nearest way…Hie thee hither, That I may pour my spirits in thine ear and chatise with the valour of my toungue All that impedes thee from the golden round” (1.5.15-27) Lady Macbeth starts to plan how to make Macbeth king, immediately jumping to the conclusion that ...

Essay Feedback: Relay essay

This essay is an essay that I will never be able to forget. I read hundreds of essays each year and this one definitly stands out. You faild so horribly in defending for your side that you were extremely successful in advocating for the opposition. With the essay prompt: Should we allow female students to wear pants?, you chose to write an essay about why we shouldn't allow it. However, because of the many hypocrisites and logical errors in your essay, one can only agree to allow the change in uniform after reading your essay. But will the school administrators agree? I don't know. No essay will probably persuade them anyways. Maybe some pressure from Gangwon's department of educatin might help, or some parent's complaint. Personally, I don't see why girls wearing pants is not good looking-who made up that nonsense? It's merely a stereotype of gender that lies within the society. Like how Scottich men wear kilts, men wearing skirts should also not be so special...
